Seven ways to perfect your putting

Improving your putting requires a combination of practice, technique, and mental focus. Below are some steps you can take to hone your skills:

  1. Practice regularly: Putting is a skill that requires consistent practice to develop. Spend time on the putting green, ideally daily or a few times a week, to build muscle memory and develop a feel for distance and speed.

  2. Work on your technique: Proper technique is crucial to good putting. Make sure your grip, stance, and alignment are correct. Focus on keeping your head and body still during the stroke, and use a smooth and consistent stroke with a slight arc.

  3. Use visualisation: Before you take your putt, visualize the ball rolling into the hole. This can build focus and give you confidence in your ability to make the shot.

  4. Read the green: Take the time to read the slope, speed, and contours of the green before you putt. This will make it easier to  select the correct speed and line for your shot.

  5. Practice different distances and angles: Vary the distance and angle of your putts to simulate real game scenarios. Variety will enable you to develop your touch and feel for different types of putts.

  6. Learn how to handle pressure: Putting can be a pressure-packed situation, especially in tournament play. Practice putting with others and try to block out distractions and give all focus to the shot in hand.

  7. Stay positive: Putting requires a positive mindset. Focus on the process rather than the outcome, and don't dwell on missed putts.

Remember to check that your grip has good tact and feel, ensuring the grip hasn’t been worn out.
